When the alarm system stopped switching off

Anxiety is exhausting in a way that is difficult to convey to anyone who has not had it. From the outside you look fine. Inside, a system built for genuine emergencies is running most of the day over things you already know are not emergencies — which is its own particular frustration, because knowing it is irrational changes nothing at all.

Anxiety therapy here works on the mechanism rather than the reasoning. Understanding why you are anxious rarely stops you being anxious, because the response is not being generated by the part of you that reasons. Stuart uses neuroscience-based techniques with EMDR, NLP, hypnotherapy and PSY-Tap to reach the level where the alarm is actually set.

Sessions are private and one-to-one at 1 Harley Street or online, and the approach is calibrated to what your anxiety is doing rather than to a general template.

What clients say

4.9 out of 5 from 209 ratings — Stuart Downing Client Reviews, verified by Trusted Practitioner

I began working with Stuart during a time when my impulse control felt overwhelming and, at times, unmanageable. Having tried several other therapists first, it was clear that Stuart's approach was both thoughtful and tailored—grounded in traditional therapeutic techniques but enhanced with hypnotherapy in a way that felt natural rather than experimental. What stood out most was his ability to create a space that felt safe without being passive. He didn't just listen; he helped me understand the underlying patterns driving my behaviour. Over time, I noticed real, measurable changes—not just in my behaviour, but in how I processed urges and emotions. This wasn't a quick fix, and Stuart never pretended it would be. But his consistency, skill, and ability to blend different methods made a lasting difference. I now feel far more in control of my decisions. I would strongly recommend Stuart to anyone struggling with impulse-related challenges, especially if you're open to a more integrative approach that goes beyond standard talk therapy.

It's taken me a while to be able to summarise how much Stuart has helped me! I have suffered with Bulimia for the last 16 years — over half of my life. During this time I've had various different counselling and therapy; you name it and I've probably tried it. Stuart is the first healthcare professional I've had that truly understood my struggles. His practical approach was revolutionary to me. I've made more progress in the last 6 months than I've done in 16 years. He's helped me unpick beliefs I've carried my whole life. There was never any pressure. It sounds cheesy but with his support I've managed to change my life! I'd urge anyone thinking about it to reach out to Stuart. He's the very best and I can't thank him enough!

— Amy

Stuart has helped me better understand and manage my fear of flying and how I over think situations. I have gained practical tools to cope with anxiety, developed greater self-awareness, and built confidence in my ability to handle challenging situations. As a result, I feel more prepared to travel in the future and less restricted by fear, which has had a positive impact on both my personal life and overall wellbeing.

— Carly

I've had quite a few sessions with Stuart. I found him easy to talk to, friendly and knowledgeable. I went to him for sleep issues I was having. My sleep has significantly improved and my anxiety has greatly reduced. I certainly recommend Stuart. Thank you so much for all your help.

— Michelle
Life after

Life when the alarm is not permanently on

Clients rarely describe becoming a different person. They describe getting the volume down, and finding out how much capacity the noise had been using.

  • Waking up without the knot already there
  • Handling a difficult meeting without it tipping into panic
  • Sending the message without drafting it eleven times
  • Sleeping without the 3am rehearsal of everything that could go wrong
  • Saying yes to things without a fortnight of dread first
  • Your shoulders sitting somewhere lower

Questions

Common questions about anxiety therapy

I know my worries are irrational. Why does that not help?

Because the reasoning part of the brain is not the part generating the response. That gap is precisely what anxiety therapy here targets — Stuart works at the level where the alarm is set rather than trying to argue with it from above.

Does this help with panic attacks as well as general anxiety?

Yes. Panic tends to run on an anticipatory loop — the fear of the attack becoming its own trigger — and anxiety therapy here works directly on that loop using PSY-Tap and hypnotherapy alongside the wider work.

Can I do this while I am taking medication?

Yes, and many clients do. Anxiety therapy here runs alongside anything your GP has prescribed rather than instead of it, and any change to medication remains a decision for your doctor rather than for Stuart.

How quickly might I notice a difference?

That varies genuinely from person to person and Stuart will not promise you a timescale. What he will do on the free call is give you a realistic picture. Anxiety therapy here runs across a series of sessions with aftercare included, not as a single appointment.

Is the cost justified?

Most clients have been managing anxiety for years, often at a quiet cost to their work and their relationships. The fee covers the full engagement: the free consultation, the anxiety therapy programme, and the continued support afterwards.
