Complex Mental Health Issue
Eating Disorders are complex mental health problems that have a number of underlying causes which can include, nuero chemical changes, genetics, lack of confidence or self-esteem, perfectionist personality trait,or problems such as bullying, or difficulties with school work can all be triggers for the condition.
Having an eating disorders severely affect the quality of life of the individual and those that care for them.
They can affect how you socialise, relationships with other people, ability to work, and have a severe impact on physical and mental health and well-being. Often an eating disorder is attempting to satisfy an emotional need, via control , restriction and in certain cases self – harming.
Food addiction presents with binge eating and bulimia which can be a constant battle with thoughts around food intake . Comfort eating and emotional eating creates an emotional response around satisfying emotional needs with food and can be very hard to break without changing your mindset and beliefs around your relationship with food.
Other Specified Feeding or Eating Disorder (OSFED) – when your symptoms don’t exactly match those of anorexia, bulimia or binge eating disorder, but it doesn’t mean it’s a less serious illness.
Avoidant restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID) is characterised by restricting and avoiding certain foods,or types of food .
From a clinical perspective, individuals with anorexia nervosa behave similarly to individuals with substance abuse by narrowing their behavioural repertoire so that weight loss, restricting food intake, and excessive exercise interfere with other activities in much the same way that substance abuse does.
